In the moonlight

Character Model

I created this 3D model in Maya for an elective class during my 2nd year of uni. The brief was to design a character model and give it life through distinctive posing.

My approach to 3D modelling is very low-poly orientated so I was very happy with the final outcome. I approached this piece with box box modelling in mind. Starting with a simple topology allowed me to gradually build personality into my work. I stuck to using Maya's basic textures and lighting as well.

design process

Originally this sketch was created for the 2020 Inktober challenge; the prompt was 'wisp'.

I drew it in Procreate on my iPad with the intention of it being nothing more than a doodle. After seeing the finished sketch, I decided to use this piece in my uni work because I could see myself having a lot of fun bringing it into a 3D space.

Using Procreate, I drew out the 'A' pose front and side so I could use it as reference in Maya.

My first road block was the hat!

After blocking out my character I quickly found out that I really had no idea how to approach a starting point to his hat. Having many points to it, I found it difficult to execute.

I soon settled on a more witchy-vibe hat with a coloured 'rock' texture from Maya's materials to give it more of a leathery type of look.

After all, he is a wizard!

My environment setup was very straightforward.

I started with cubes and added numerous vertices before soft-selecting random points to create a more 'natural' feel for the mountain. I then used the same rock material as the hat, but in a brown colour.

My entire scene setup has been placed in a reversed sphere with a galaxy image over the top to create the night sky.

These are the images I had used to texture the background.

The galaxy was drawn up in Procreate and the moon was a free image from a stock image website.
